Watch Out for Fake HP Printer Scan Emails

Keep an eye out for fraudulent emails claiming that a document was scanned and sent to you from your office Hewletter-Packard ScanJet printer.

Sophos warns that spammers are once again sending out bogus scan-to-email notices in an attempt to dupe users into clicking malicious links that lead to websites serving malware.

This isn’t the first time that spammers mimicked document-to-file scan notifications, but previous attempts involved malicious file attachments vs. links in the email itself.

The malware served in the attack was not disclosed; however, the websites associated with this attack are rigged with the BlackHole exploit kit, which typically leverages PDF, Flash & Java vulnerabilities in order to plant malware on the visiting machine.

So, keep your computer safe by:

• Not following links embedded in unsolicited emails – at least not without investigating them first.


• Running antivirus software that offers real-time scanning & keep the virus definitions current. (Btw, Sophos blocks the page as Mal/ExpJS-N.).


• Keeping your operating system and third-party software fully patched & up-to-date.

If you’ve already clicked the link, run a full system scan to detect & remove any potential malware that may have been installed on your computer.

Looks like anyone that’s hoping to snag a HP TouchPad tablet at the fire sale price can expect to purchase more than one PC in order to get it.

TigerDirect announced their new HP TouchPad deal, which offers shoppers the opportunity to buy a HP TouchPad for $149 if they buy a qualifying HP laptop or desktop computer at the same time.

However, folks ready to jump at the deal may want to stop and read the fine print:

• You will be paying the HP TouchPad’s full retail price of $299 at checkout.


• You will have to remember to send in a mail-in rebate for $150 to ultimately get the fire sale price of $149.

At least it’s the 32GB version, right?

Best Buy recently advertised a similar deal, although their savings appeared to be instant.

If you’re looking to get the HP TouchPad only, you may want to check Amazon for the best deals. The HP TouchPad prices may not be as low as $99 or even $149, but they’re at least lower than TigerDirect’s retail price.

As stated in the fine print, you’re not getting anything for free.

Best Buy Selling the 32GB HP TouchPad for $149... with a Twist

Do you want a 32GB HP TouchPad for $149?

Folks are still foaming at the mouth, waiting for the chance to sink their teeth into their very own HP TouchPad thanks to the fire sale back in August that lead to the discontinued TouchPad being unloaded from store shelves for as little as $99 for the 16GB version.

Unable to resist the opportunity, HP vowed to produce one final batch of TouchPads, but decided to leave the terms of sale up to the retailers that got them.

Looks like we’re beginning to find out what those terms are.

As of November 1^st (today), Best Buy has the 32GB HP Touchpad for sale on their website – but there’s a catch.

In order to get the 32GB HP TouchPad for the fire sale-inspired price of $149, you have to purchase a qualifying HP or Compaq computer with it.

Without the additional computer purchase, you can look forward to shelling out $599.99 for the 32GB HP TouchPad.

Isn’t that just peachy?

If you were thinking about being sneaky by returning the extra computer but keeping the TouchPad, you can forget it. Best Buy has stated in the terms of the special offer that if you return it without also returning the HP TouchPad you will be forced to pay the $450 difference.

It looks like either way you’ll be looking at forking over a good $600, but at least you’ll have more than one computer and you’ll finally have your HP TouchPad.

Hewlett-Packard Says It’s Keeping Its PC Division

Hewlett-Packard has announced that they will be keeping their PC division after determining that the costs of a spin-off would outweigh the benefits.

“It’s clear after our analysis that keeping PSG within HP is right for customers and partners, right for shareholders, and right for employees, “ HP’s new CEO Meg Whitman said in a statement, “HP is committed to PSG, and together we are stronger.”

The idea of bowing out of the personal computing business was originally conjured up back in mid-August by now ex-CEO Leo Apotheker, who wanted to focus on HP's  software and server businesses versus personal computers.

Apotheker was  removed from his post by the board of directors and replaced with Meg Whitman in late September, who quickly got to work in undoing the damage he'd done.

“As part of HP, PSG will continue to give customers and partners the advantages of product innovation and global scale across the industry’s broadest portfolio of PCs, workstations and more,” said Todd Bradley, executive vice president, Personal Systems Group, HP. “We intend to make the leading PC business in the world even better."

HP Cutting 500 Employees from WebOS Division

Hewlett-Packard has begun to lay-off employees from its WebOS division.

While HP failed to respond to inquiries on how many WebOS employees would be let go, they did confirm that lay-offs were to begin this week. Sources close to HP state that as many as 525 employees may receive the axe.

In a statement made to AllThingsD, a HP spokesperson stated:

"During this time, we stand by our commitment to our webOS customers and will work to ensure that support and service for customers are not adversely affected. HP is exploring ways to leverage webOS software.”

Word of the lay-offs follows HP’s announcement in mid-August stating that they were shuttering the WebOS hardware unit, which includes the HP TouchPad and Pre3 devices.

It was shortly thereafter that HP slashed the prices of the WebOS-based TouchPad tablet to a cool $99, sparking a fire sale that sent countless folks into a TouchPad buying frenzy,  during which time the TouchPad became the #1 Best Seller on Amazon for electronics.

Despite the short-lived fame of the HP TouchPad, HP still intends on closing the division by the end of this fiscal year’s fourth quarter, which wraps up on October 31^st.
