Handful of Refurbished Motorola XOOM Wi-Fi Tablets Sold with Original Owner Data

Motorola XOOM TabletIf you purchased and then returned a Motorola XOOM Wi-Fi tablet between March and October of 2011, you may want to get in touch with Motorola Mobility (and Experian) to get your complimentary two-year membership of Experian’s ProtectMyID™ Alert service.

On Friday, Motorola Mobility issued a press release stating that they’d discovered approximately 100 out of a batch of 6,200 refurbished Motorola XOOM Wi-Fi tablets were not completely wiped of the previous owner’s data before being resold on Woot.com.
The information that may be accessible to the purchasers of the impacted refurbished tablets may include any information that the original user elected to store on the tablet. It is possible that users might have stored photographs and documents. They may have also stored user names and passwords for email and social media accounts, as well as other password-protected sites and applications.

The affected Motorola XOOM Wi-Fi tablets were originally purchased from and returned to Amazon.com, Best Buy, BJ’s Wholesale, eBay, Office Max, Radio Shack, Sam’s Club or Staples – along with a few other independent retailers that were not named in the press release. The bottom line:  If you returned a Motorola XOOM Wi-Fi tablet between March and October of 2011, and you did not do a factory reset prior to returning the tablet, you will want to take precautionary steps to protect your identity.

Motorola is advising original tablet owners to contact Experian at 1-866-926-9803 to sign up for the credit monitoring service and change all of their account passwords (email, social media, etc.).

Motorola is encouraging customers who purchased a refurbished Motorola XOOM Wi-Fi tablet from Woot.com between October and December 2011 to visit the Motorola website or call Motorola Mobility Customer Support (800-734-5870) to determine whether or not their tablet is affected.

Motorola did not explain why the original owner’s data was not erased from the tablets prior to them being re-sold; however they’ve apologized for the inconvenience to customers:
Motorola sincerely regrets and apologizes for any inconvenience this situation has caused the affected customers. Motorola is committed to rigorous data protection practices in order to protect its customers, and will continue to take the necessary steps to achieve this objective.

The full press release can be seen on the Motorola website.

BlackBerry PlayBook Priced at $199 for ‘Limited Time’

BlackBerry PlayBookWhether or not Research in Motion’s PlayBook tablet is next in line for the chopping block is yet to be known, but those who still have faith in the PlayBook can pick one up for just $199.

RIM took to Twitter to get the word out that “for a limited time” shoppers in the U.S. and Canada can purchase the PlayBook for $199 from participating retailers.

RIM's Tweet Announcing BlackBerry PlayBook on Sale

According to the BlackBerry website, those who are interested can find the deal at Best Buy, Wal-Mart, Office Depot, Radio Shack and Wireless Giant. However, as of this writing only Best Buy appears to be reflecting the $199 sales price. So if you're looking to get one, you better move fast!

BlackBerry business customers can enjoy an entirely different deal in BlackBerry’s Back to Business promotion. Business customers that purchase two PlayBook tablets from an authorized value added reseller will receive an additional BlackBerry Playbook for free, along with a free accessory of their choosing for each PlayBook.

More HP TouchPads Selling at $149 - with Strings Attached

HP Touchpad TabletLooks like anyone that’s hoping to snag a HP TouchPad tablet at the fire sale price can expect to purchase more than one PC in order to get it.

TigerDirect announced their new HP TouchPad deal, which offers shoppers the opportunity to buy a HP TouchPad for $149 if they buy a qualifying HP laptop or desktop computer at the same time.

However, folks ready to jump at the deal may want to stop and read the fine print:

  • You will be paying the HP TouchPad’s full retail price of $299 at checkout.

  • You will have to remember to send in a mail-in rebate for $150 to ultimately get the fire sale price of $149.

At least it’s the 32GB version, right?

Best Buy recently advertised a similar deal, although their savings appeared to be instant.

If you’re looking to get the HP TouchPad only, you may want to check Amazon for the best deals. The HP TouchPad prices may not be as low as $99 or even $149, but they’re at least lower than TigerDirect’s retail price.

Will you be buying a HP TouchPad or are you going to go for a different tablet?

Spammers Now Offering Free HP TouchPads to Attract Victims

HP TouchPadIt appears as though even spammers are realizing the value in the HP TouchPad and have begun using the recently popular tablet as bait in their spam campaigns.

Be on the lookout for any “special offers” that advertise a free HP TouchPad – likely to be delivered via spam email or maybe even through a social networking site:

*Summary of Program Requirements: (1) Meet the eligibility requirements, (2) complete the survey, and (3) complete the required number of Sponsor Offers. Visit our website to read the complete Terms & Conditions.

As stated in the fine print, you’re not getting anything for free.

In fact, you will be forced to complete a number of “reward offers” that often require you to sign-up for a paid monthly service or apply for a credit card/loan. You are then forced to keep your account active for a minimum of 1 month of service to qualify for the prize – that’s if they actually keep their word to award it.

Seeing how the HP TouchPad has been a popular topic since it was discontinued a few months ago and promptly followed by a fire sale that sent the public into a feeding frenzy, it wouldn’t be too far-fetched to see more scams offering the coveted tablet as a prize.

If you were hoping to get your hands on a HP TouchPad, you’re better off heading over to Best Buy to take advantage of their special deal to get the 32GB HP TouchPad for just $149 – but even that feels like a scam once you’ve read the terms.

Sorry folks, it seems like the fire sale was the one & only chance to nab the HP TouchPad for under 150 bucks without having to watch out for any fine print.

Best Buy Selling the 32GB HP TouchPad for $149... with a Twist

Best Buy TouchPad OfferDo you want a 32GB HP TouchPad for $149?

Folks are still foaming at the mouth, waiting for the chance to sink their teeth into their very own HP TouchPad thanks to the fire sale back in August that lead to the discontinued TouchPad being unloaded from store shelves for as little as $99 for the 16GB version.

Unable to resist the opportunity, HP vowed to produce one final batch of TouchPads, but decided to leave the terms of sale up to the retailers that got them.

Looks like we’re beginning to find out what those terms are.

As of November 1st (today), Best Buy has the 32GB HP Touchpad for sale on their website – but there’s a catch.

In order to get the 32GB HP TouchPad for the fire sale-inspired price of $149, you have to purchase a qualifying HP or Compaq computer with it.

Without the additional computer purchase, you can look forward to shelling out $599.99 for the 32GB HP TouchPad.

Isn’t that just peachy?

Best Buy Cart with Qualifying PC and HP TouchPadIf you were thinking about being sneaky by returning the extra computer but keeping the TouchPad, you can forget it. Best Buy has stated in the terms of the special offer that if you return it without also returning the HP TouchPad you will be forced to pay the $450 difference.

It looks like either way you’ll be looking at forking over a good $600, but at least you’ll have more than one computer and you’ll finally have your HP TouchPad.

Question is.... is the HP TouchPad really worth it? Share your thoughts below!

RIM BlackBerry PlayBook OS Update Delayed Until February 2012

BlackBerry PlayBookResearch in Motion has found a new way to tick off its customers, this time by announcing that the update for the BlackBerry PlayBook OS won’t be released until February 2012.

PlayBook owners have been waiting on the OS 2.0 update for months, hoping that they’ll finally get native support for e-mail, calendar, address book and even BlackBerry Messenger features. Currently folks are forced to utilize BlackBerry Bridge in order to access their email, calendars, Blackberry Messenger or any other data with their PlayBook tablet.

On top of delaying the PlayBook OS update, RIM stated that when the update does roll out in February of next year, it won’t include the popular BlackBerry Messenger service.

That’s kind of funny, considering RIM started out the announcement by saying, “As much as we’d love to have it in your hands today, we’ve made the difficult decision to wait to launch BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 until we are confident we have fully met the expectations of our developers, enterprise customers and end-users.”

Wouldn’t that mean that the 2.0 update would have to include BlackBerry Messenger in order to meet the expectations of developers, enterprise customers and end-users?

Yes. Yes, it does.

Frustrated BlackBerry Playbook users aren’t being shy about voicing their opinion on the matter and have taken to leave comments on The Official BlackBerry Blog entry posted on Tuesday regarding the announcement:
This is not acceptable.  You just lost a loyal customer.
~ Dustin Harding

This is the last nail in your coffin RIM. I WAS a firm believer in you but I'm sick of playing the waiting game. Either keep your promises or don't mention anything at all. Bye bye Bold 9900 / PlayBook, hello iPhone 4S / iPad.
~ Antirim

We'll, it's been a fun 6 months of "it's coming". Time to go somewhere where it's already arrived. You'll find my playbook on ebay.
~ Jay Tee

I have been a long time RIM Shareholder and Blackberry User. Over the past couple years I have been loyal and patient but with all the recent delays and mis-steps I am finally moving on. If RIM is losing me (the perfect Customer) business must be getting pretty bad. Good luck with you future efforts. I will be watching from my iphone.
~ Hedgesw

you should really look into what the public is saying about you on crackberry..... i cant believe you are doing this to your loyal customers
~ Imenu

So much for the PlayBook OS update potentially generating a fresh batch of interest just in time for the holiday season.

The Blackberry Playbook has pretty much been a flop since it was launched earlier this year and appears to be unable to shake the cloud of negative reviews. Only 200,000 PlayBooks were shipped last quarter, which is down from the 500,000 shipped in the previous quarter.

Recently major retailers like Best Buy and Staples took a hint from the HP TouchPad fire sale craze and attempted to spark similar interest by slashing PlayBook prices by $200. That didn’t work all that well, considering the PlayBook still ended up costing $299-499 depending on the model and also sparked rumors that the PlayBook was headed towards the tablet graveyard to rest in peace alongside the HP TouchPad.

Hopefully Research in Motion will wake up and get their act together soon; otherwise investors just may give the board the boot.

BlackBerry PlayBook On Sale; Headed for Tablet Graveyard?

BlackBerry PlayBookHave you been on the fence whether or not you should buy a Blackberry Playbook?

Major retailers started slashing the price of the Blackberry Playbook just hours after Amazon unveiled the Kindle Fire tablet which carries an appealing $199 price tag.

Best Buy has knocked off $200 on each BlackBerry Playbook model, selling the 16GB version for $299, the 32GB Playbook for $399 & the 64GB Playbook for $499. The 16GB BlackBerry Playbook is currently on backorder as of Thursday morning.

Both Staples & Office Depot are also offering discounts on the Playbook tablet line, although they only offer a $100 discount per model.

[Update 10/3: Staples is now offering a $200 discount on the Playbook as well]

BlackBerry PlayBook to Go the Way of the HP TouchPad?

Considering what happened with the HP TouchPad, rumors are already starting to swirl over whether or not Research In Motion is going to bail on the Blackberry Playbook. It wasn’t too long ago that Hewlett-Packard attempted to jump-start sales by slashing $100 off the cost of the HP TouchPad shortly before just pulling the plug altogether.

The idea of the Blackberry Playbook suffering the same fate isn’t too far-fetched considering only 200,000 Playbooks shipped last quarter. That sales number pales in comparison to Apple's iPad selling 9.3 million units in the same timeframe.

So far RIM has denied that they’re ceasing production on the BlackBerry Playbook and bowing out of the tablet market. A spokesperson for RIM took to email earlier and issued the following statement following the rumors:
"RIM doesn’t typically comment on rumors, but any suggestion that the BlackBerry PlayBook is being discontinued is pure fiction. RIM remains highly committed to the tablet market.”

We’ll see if they’re still singing the same tune when Amazon’s Kindle Fire starts shipping on November 15th.

HP TouchPad Preparing for Final Encore in October

HP TouchPadIf you haven’t heard, HP is intending on serving up one last round of TouchPads in late October to help clear out their supplier inventories and [hopefully] appease a few of those who missed their chance in the fire sale last month.

The number of HP TouchPads said to be produced in the final batch is around 100,000–200,000.  That hardly seems like enough, as the fire sale left many with the bitter taste of disappointment after countless orders were cancelled due to the depleted inventory. Still, it’s better than nothing.

While the option to sign-up and be notified of TouchPad availability has crashed and burned, HP has been communicating with those who are interested in purchasing a TouchPad via Twitter (@BrynaatHP & @MarkatHP) and this HP Next Bench blog post.

In terms of pricing, we’re all hoping that HP will continue to sell them at the price of $99 for the 16GB version and $149 for the 32GB version. However, HP states retailers carry their own policy for price matching.

Will you be watching for updates and rushing to get your hands on a TouchPad?
